Museum of Cosmonautics

It is all too easy to find this Museum, which is located near the VDNH metro station: there is a 107 meter stele of the Conquerors of Space in the form of a soaring rocket which rises high above it. The stele was erected in 1964, and the museum on its stylobate opened in 1981 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's flight. Since then, the exhibition has been repeatedly reconstructed and supplemented. Nowadays, the museum tells visitors all there is to know about Russian cosmonautics, save for information classified as top secret.

Authentic landing vehicles (not only “Vostok” and “Soyuz”, but also return module of the Almaz rocket and space complex), replicas of satellites, orbital and interplanetary stations, authentic household items of cosmonauts from “Mir” and the ISS, meteorites and moon soil, and even the spacesuit of an American astronaut from a lunar expedition and much more: it is sure to take several hours to visit this museum.

The museum's display tells the stories of space explorers. Among them are the renowned Belka and Strelka. Belka and Strelka, the first living creatures to be in orbit and to safely return to Earth, lived to a great age.
