Expositions

The museum contains collections of medical instruments, medicine, and civilian and military doctors uniforms. There are many archival documents, including decrees, atlases, and medical books. It also houses more than 300 personal funds of prominent figures in medicine and natural science, including V. Bekhterev, S. Botkin, I. Mechnikov, I. Pavlov, N. Pirogov and I. Sechenov. The museum has an extensive photo library. Visitors can see the Anatomical Atlas by the Dutch doctor G. Bidloo, which was a handbook to the first Russian doctors of the 18th century, and other archival medical publications. The halls of the museum display paintings by famous artists V. Borovikovsky and I. Repin, along with the works of outstanding sculptors M. Anikushin, M. Antokolsky and V. Mukhina. Nowadays, you can see an exhibition entitled Medicine of Russia and St. Petersburg, and there is a permanent exhibition called The Humane Weapon of Victory, dedicated to the selfless work of Soviet military doctors during the Great Patriotic War.

History

The Military Medical Museum is the national pride of Russia and is the only one of its kind in Russia. The unique museum introduces the main stages of the formation and development of Russian medicine and the contribution of its outstanding representatives to the world treasury of science. The Museum of Russian Medicine and Military Medical Service is located in the historical center of St. Petersburg on the territory and in the buildings of the former Semenovsky Life Guards regiment. The collection of the museum originates from the first medical collections of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Among them are the exhibits brought by Peter I to Russia at the beginning of the 18th century, a collection of tools from the Craftsman's Hut, founded in 1721 by Decree of Peter I for the manufacture of surgical instruments, the Surgical Museum at the Medical-Surgical Academy, the N. I. Pirogov Museum of the Surgical Society, the Museum of the Military Medical Service of the Red Army, and so on. The Military Medical Museum was established in Moscow during the Great Patriotic War, in 1942, and three years later it was transferred to Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). The number of visitors to the Military Medical Museum is constantly growing, and the collections are regularly expanded. At present, the museum is recognized as one of the largest in the world in terms of the wealth of its assets, containing more than 450,000 exhibits!

Interesting Facts

The expositions of the museum are available not only for in-person visits, but also for Internet users online. The museum has created a whole range of programs for children of different age groups. Entertaining Hygiene for Babies" takes place in the form of an interactive theatrical program, where children, accompanied by adults, can draw, do exercises, and guess riddles. The Entertaining Anatomy for Children and Their Parents program will take you on a journey into the human body and teach you how it works. What’s more, the Entertaining Medicine program, designed for schoolchildren aged 8-12, will take children into the past, introducing them to interesting discoveries and telling them unusual and mysterious facts about the history of medicine. The program includes a first aid master class. The museum has programs focused on the patriotic education of adolescents (including the quest Get to Berlin and the programs Blockade Christmas Tree and Childhood Seared by the War). The Military Medical Museum has repeatedly won a number of nominations for major Russian and international projects. It creates topical and resonant exhibition projects in Russia and abroad. Also, the organization regularly participates in the events Night of Museums and Children's Days in St. Petersburg, among others. Regular visitors to this unique cultural facility include students of military educational institutions and representatives of patriotic social movements. The museum conducts work with military personnel and their families.
