Vladimir Dahl Russian State Literary Museum is the largest literary museum in Russia. Museum’s collection consists of unique manuscripts, paintings and drawings, memorial books, audio records of writers’ voices and thousands of authentic items related to life and work of Russian writers, that tell us the history of Russian book culture and reading. In addition to the major exhibitions, the museum is undertaking a significant number of educational and leisure projects, conducting academic conferences, new books’ presentations and meetings with famous poets and writers.
Museum includes two exhibition grounds and ten memorial houses of outstanding Russian writers: Mikhail Lermontov, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Anton Chekhov, Boris Pasternak, Korney Chukovsky, Mikhail Prishvin, Alexander Solzhenitsyn and others.

Vladimir Dahl Russian State Literary Museum has a rich and complex history. According to the author of the concept of the central literary museum of the country, the famous statesman Vladimir Dmitrievich Bonch-Bruevich (1873-1955), the idea of such a museum was formed in 1903.
The history of the present —Vladimir Dahl Russian State Literary Museum dates back to the creation of two museums dedicated to the heritage of the great Russian classics-A. P. Chekhov and F. M. Dostoevsky. The Moscow State Museum named after A. P. Chekhov was founded on October 17, 1921, its collections are now in the funds of the Vladimir Dahl Russian State Literary Museum, which traces its lineage back to this date and is preparing to celebrate the centenary in October 2021. The initiative to create a museum of another classic, F. M. Dostoevsky, was also put forward in 1921, on the eve of the writer's centenary. The Dostoevsky Museum was founded in 1928, and in 1940 became part of the main literary museum of the country, becoming its first department.
Of particular importance in the history of Vladimir Dahl Russian State Literary Museum is the creation in 1933 on the initiative of V. D. Bonch-Bruevich of the Central Museum of Fiction, Criticism and Journalism. Its stock collections included museum items acquired, among other things, as a result of the work of the state Commission established in 1931 to identify monuments of literature and art of the peoples of the USSR located abroad. However, on July 16, 1934, this museum was abolished, and on the basis of its collection and the collection of the Literary Museum at the Lenin Library, Vladimir Dahl Russian State Literary Museum was created.
In 2017, the museum received a new name: Vladimir Dahl Russian State Literary Museum , which fully corresponds not only to the modern mission of the largest literary museum in the country, but also to the original idea of the creator of the scientific concept of the museum, V. D. Bonch-Bruevich, who believed that the cornerstone of the existence of such a large cultural institution should be a combination of the functions of five institutions: the museum itself, as well as the archive, library, research institute and scientific publishing house.
