History

The Krasnoyarsk Regional Museum of Local Lore is one of the oldest museums in Siberia and Russia as a whole. He played an important role in the development of the cultural potential of the Krasnoyarsk Territory – his collections served as the basis for the creation of new cultural objects.
The museum was founded on the initiative of the spouses Innokenty Alekseevich and Yulia Petrovna Matveev, they also became the first donors of the museum. In particular, from Yulia Petrovna, the daughter of the gold miner and philanthropist P. I. Kuznetsov, received a painting by V. I. Surikov "The Merciful Samaritan", which the author gave to Matveeva's father.

The grand opening of the Krasnoyarsk City Public Museum took place on February 12, 1889.

For two decades since 1905, the museum was headed by the famous ornithologist Arkady Yakovlevich Tugarinov, during his leadership all the hardships of the First World War, the Revolution, the Civil War and the post-war devastation fell out. However, at this time there was a large replenishment of natural science and ethnographic collections of the museum due to numerous expeditions.

The main achievement of this time was the construction of a new special building for the museum. according to the project of the krasnoyarsk architect leonid chernyshev, in the spring of 1914, the construction of the building in the form of an egyptian temple was started. Completion of construction was prevented by the First World War. in the following decade, the building was used as a barracks, infirmary and concentration camp. in 1920, a fire broke out in the premises. Only in the late 1920s, already under the director A. N. Sobolev, the building was renovated and transferred to the museum, which since 1920 was called the State Museum of the Yenisei Region.
in 1930, the museum opened in a new building (dubrovinsky, 84). At this time, the museum was actively involved in the local history movement, and collaborated with well-known scientists. but at the end of the 1930s in the ussr there was a defeat of local history organizations, the ideologization of museums increased, which the authorities sought to turn into propaganda organizations.

After the formation of the Krasnoyarsk Territory in 1934, another name change took place, the museum became the Krasnoyarsk Regional Museum, and after some time the Krasnoyarsk Regional Museum of Local Lore.
